Math Adapt AI is the patent-pending engine inside Math Workout that shapes your workouts to you. It notices the kinds of sums that slow you down, brings them back while you play, and suggests a harder level once you are flying. It works on your device, from your own answers. You stay in charge: you can set each workout's level yourself at any time.
Which workouts does Math Adapt AI change?
It shapes the three classic workouts: Add & Subtract, Multiply & Divide and I'm Feeling Clever. Each of them has its own level, so you can be on Hard in one and Easy in another.
Times Table Master has its own adaptive challenges (AI ×12 and AI ×15), and other parts of the app use what you have learned too: for example, Progress shows the facts you know best and the ones to practise.
How does it know what I find hard?
It looks at your first try at each question:
- a wrong first answer counts against that kind of sum
- so does a right answer that took a lot longer than your own usual time (it compares you with you, never with other players)
- two quick, right answers in a row win back a miss
Sums are grouped into kinds such as times tables, division, adding with carrying, adding without carrying and taking away. Until it has seen enough of your answers, or when you write your answers by hand, it only looks at wrong answers, never at speed.
What does "Focusing on ×" mean?
When one kind of sum is giving you trouble, Math Adapt AI swaps some of the questions you have not reached yet for more of that kind, at the same level. A chip at the top of the screen tells you, for example Focusing on ×, and then shrinks to a small ADAPTIVE pill. The round stays the same length.
It steps in at most twice a round, only in the middle part of the round, and never gives you three of the same kind in a row. After the round, Doc's card tells you how many extra questions it gave you on your weak spot.
Why do the sums I got wrong come back later?
Math Workout keeps a memory score for every fact, like 7 × 8. A quick right answer raises it, a wrong one lowers it, and it slowly fades over time, the way memories do. When a new round starts, up to 40% of its questions can be the facts that are weakest or due for a review; the rest are fresh. That is spaced practice, and you can read about the science on Math Adapt AI: the science.
How do I change a workout's difficulty level?
- On the home screen, tap the gear to open Settings.
- Find the Math Adapt AI card. It has a row for each of the three workouts.
- Tap the bars on a row to choose Easy, Medium, Hard or Very Hard.
The same card is on the Progress screen. On a computer you can also right-click one of these workout cards on the home screen and choose Difficulty. The countdown before a round shows the level you are playing.
What do Easy, Medium, Hard and Very Hard ask?
New players start on Easy in every workout. The levels ask:
- Easy: adding numbers up to 8, taking away within 12, times tables and sharing up to 6 × 6
- Medium: adding and taking away up to 30, times tables and sharing up to 12 × 12
- Hard: adding and taking away up to 99 and 100, multiplying up to 15 × 10, dividing with answers up to 15
- Very Hard: adding numbers from 100 to 299, multiplying from 5 × 5 up to 19 × 19
Easy and Medium are free. Hard and Very Hard are part of Math Workout Pro: choosing them as a free player opens the Pro screen.
Why did Doc offer to step me up?
After three clean rounds in a row in the same workout (no wrong answers, and about as quick as your usual pace or quicker), Doc offers the next level on the score screen: Step me up or Not yet. He asks at most once every 20 hours for each workout. If you step up, a Play now button starts a round at the new level straight away. If the next level is Hard and you do not have Pro yet, Step me up opens the Pro screen first.
Can I go back to an easier level?
Yes. Tap a lower bar on the Math Adapt AI card whenever you like. The app never moves you down by itself, and it only moves you up when you say yes.
Can I turn Math Adapt AI off?
There is no switch to turn it off. You can always pick your own level for each workout, and it never changes the level without asking.
Is my data sent anywhere?
Math Adapt AI works on your device, from your own answers. If you sign in, your levels and your memory scores are saved to your account so they follow you to your other devices. See Why sign in?.
