Doc, your coach, now has a 3D head. He sits beside the MATH WORKOUT name at the top of the home screen, and he joins you on his info cards.
What does Doc say when I open the app?
Each time you open Math Workout, Doc fills the top card of the home screen for about four seconds. He does not do this the very first time you open the app, or when you come back to the home screen from a workout.
He says hello ("Good morning!", or "Day 3 in a row!" from your third day in a row) and makes one suggestion, with a button that opens it:
- a sum that tripped you up in the last 30 days, with the workout that practises it (Times Table Master for a times table, Multiply & Divide for a division, Add & Subtract for an addition or a subtraction);
- otherwise today's World Challenge, if you are online and have not played it today;
- otherwise today's Brain Age Check, if you have not done it today;
- otherwise a quick Add & Subtract.
He never suggests buying Pro. Tap anywhere else in the card or press a key, and he shrinks back to his place beside the name straight away.
Why did Doc congratulate me?
When you have done something worth celebrating since your last visit, Doc says so first: a better Brain Age Check result, a new personal best (a faster time in a classic workout, a longer Math Run, a higher Galaxy Run score), a new badge, or a top 10 place in today's World Challenge. He also cheers 3, 7 and 30 days in a row. He says each one once on each device.
What happens when I press Doc?
He plays one of 20 surprises, each with its own sound: a wink, a lightbulb idea, a pencil rocket, a sneeze, juggling, a cartwheel and more. The first 20 presses show all 20, one after another; after that they come in a shuffled order, never the same one twice in a row. Press him five times quickly and see what happens.
His sounds follow the Sound Effects switch in Settings.
Can I move Doc?
Yes, when he is in 3D:
- Turn him: drag sideways across him and his head turns with your finger. Flick fast and he spins round.
- Carry him: press and hold him for a moment and he lifts off. Move him anywhere on the screen, then let go and he flies back to his place. Letting go never presses what is under your finger.
A drag that starts up or down scrolls the page as usual. With a mouse, drag him the same way.
Can I use Doc with a keyboard?
Yes. Doc is a button: press Tab until he is selected, then Enter or Space to press him. The Left and Right arrow keys turn his head while he is selected.
Does Doc appear anywhere else?
When a card with Doc opens over the home screen, such as a workout's briefing, he moves into the card and back again when it closes. Tap him there for a surprise too; it never presses the card's buttons. On score cards, the Pro screen and in the 3D games he shows as a 3D picture instead.
Why is Doc not moving?
Doc shows as a still picture, and the 3D graphics are never downloaded, when your device asks for reduced motion, when Data Saver is on, on phones with little memory or few processor cores, on devices that run Math Workout's lightest graphics, and on devices without 3D graphics. Pressing the still Doc changes his pose, and his hello still appears as a picture.
To save battery, the 3D Doc also rests when another card covers him, when you scroll him off the screen, when the app is in the background and after 20 seconds without a press or a tap.
Can I turn 3D Doc off?
Turning on reduced motion in your device's settings shows the still Doc everywhere in the app.
