The everyday math
Primary (elementary) teachers teach math and use it to run the day: marks, averages and timings. O*NET rates knowledge of mathematics at 73 out of 100 for importance for elementary school teachers.1 The UK National Careers Service lists "maths knowledge" among a primary school teacher's skills.2 To train to teach primary in England, you need GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above in English, mathematics and science, and a degree in any subject.3
In Ontario, the Mathematics Proficiency Test was reinstated as a certification requirement for teachers certified from 1 February 2025. Its math part covers content from Grades 3 to 9, and a pass is 70% or higher on both the mathematics and the pedagogy components in the same attempt. Calculator rule: the test "includes some no-calculator and some calculator-enabled items".4

The skills behind it, built around science
The sums of a school day are mostly percentages of a class, averages and minutes, built from the same facts you teach. Times Table Master practises the tables, and Method Lab teaches named mental math methods, such as making ten, with animated worked examples.
Honest limits
Math Workout practises quick mental arithmetic. It is not job training or test preparation, and it never replaces the calculators your job or test requires or the checks your workplace uses.
The Ontario test also has calculator-enabled items and a pedagogy component, and Math Workout is not preparation for it. Confidence with numbers is part of the job; Math Workout is a few minutes of practice with your own arithmetic, and we make no claim about pupils' results or about math anxiety.
