Pharmacy technicians

Days supply is a division sum: 60 tablets, one taken twice a day, last 30 days.

The everyday math

Pharmacy technicians count, measure and charge for medicines. O*NET rates "Compute charges for medication or equipment dispensed to hospital patients" at 93 out of 100 for importance, "Mix pharmaceutical preparations, according to written prescriptions" at 86 and "Order, label, and count stock of medications" at 85, and its summary says technicians "May measure, mix, count out, label, and record amounts and dosages of medications".1 The UK National Careers Service lists "maths knowledge" among the skills for the job.2

In the US, the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) gives Order Entry and Processing 22.50% of the exam, and its first item covers "Formulas, calculations, ratios, proportions, conversions, Sig codes" for days supply, quantity, dose, concentration and dilutions.3 Calculator rule: PTCB's help centre says "A calculator is built into the PTCB exam" and that a personal calculator may not be used; a test centre may lend a hand-held one if a candidate asks and one is available. Rules can change, so check them before you sit the exam.4

Try a sum from this job

These are the number facts inside sums like the ones this job uses. They are practice only, never instructions for real work.

The skills behind it, built around science

A days supply or a quantity is mostly multiplying and dividing whole numbers, with a check that the answer looks right. Multiply & Divide and Times Table Master practise those facts, and The Brain Cruncher asks you to keep a total in your head while the next step arrives. In a review of 17 small studies, fact fluency programmes that used drill and practice with modelling gave the largest effects.5 No study of pharmacy technicians' own calculation skills was found, so we cite none.

Honest limits

Math Workout practises quick mental arithmetic. It is not job training or test preparation, and it never replaces the calculators your job or test requires or the checks your workplace uses.

The workouts cover the multiplying and dividing, not Sig codes, conversions, compounding or pharmacy law, and they are not PTCE preparation. Pharmacist checks and pharmacy systems stay essential, and we make no safety claim.
