Math at work

Building trades

One researcher spent six months working as an apprentice carpenter in Cape Town just to study the math carpenters do.

The everyday math

Carpenters and joiners measure, mark and cut. O*NET rates "Measure and mark cutting lines on materials" at 76 out of 100 for importance for carpenters, "Shape or cut materials to specified measurements" at 71 and "Prepare cost estimates for clients or employers" at 61.1 Plumbers "Locate and mark the position of pipe installations ... using measuring instruments" (79), "Lay out full scale drawings of pipe systems" (78) and "Estimate time, material, or labor costs for use in project plans" (68).2 The UK National Careers Service lists "knowledge of maths" as a skill for both carpenters and plumbers.3,4 A plumber's estimate is a string of quick sums: lengths, fittings and time.

Calculator rule: we did not find an official national math test for these trades; tests are set locally, so ask the course or employer. In England, English and math are a mandatory part of an apprenticeship for apprentices who start aged 16 to 18 without a suitable equivalent qualification, and an optional part for those aged 19 and over, funded if their employer agrees.5

These are the number facts inside sums like the ones this job uses. They are practice only, never instructions for real work.

The skills behind it, built around science

A researcher who spent six months as an apprentice with a group of carpenters in Cape Town found that their mathematical ideas were mainly about shape and space, and that in one problem-solving episode the carpenters engaged in "a wide variety of mathematizing activities".6 That is geometry, which Math Workout does not teach. What it does practise is the multiplying, dividing and adding behind a cutting list or an estimate: the classic workouts for the number facts, and Method Lab for named shortcuts such as making ten.

Honest limits

Math Workout practises quick mental arithmetic. It is not job training or test preparation, and it never replaces the calculators your job or test requires or the checks your workplace uses.

Gradients, pipe sizes and spacings come from regulations and manufacturers' tables, and the tape, the square and the plans stay the tools. Math Workout practises arithmetic, not geometry, layout or building regulations. The sums above ignore saw cuts and other real-world details on purpose.
